Is Solar Just A Toy For Rich People?
The short answer? No.
The long answer:
People will frequently comment that “People who can’t afford solar are subsidising their neighbour who can afford it” (through their electricity bills).
Don’t get me wrong – this is true, to a point. Part of the cost of electricity that you pay is due to the subsidies that renewable energy, including solar, recieve.
But to make it seem like you have one poor destitute family sending their hard-earned money to the rich bankers with solar next door who laugh while lighting cigars with $100 notes – well, that’s just being intellectually dishonest.
Firstly, the total cost of subsidising renewable energy amounts to roughly 5% of a households electricity bill. If households turned off appliances and lights at night that they dont need on, they’ll already take more than 5% off their electricity bill.
Secondly, just because you don’t use something personally is no reason to be angry that your money goes towards it. There are many, many things that my tax dollars go towards that I’ll never personally use – but that doesn’t mean I’m suddenly going to get angry about it! I send my kids to a public school, and yet my tax dollars, in part, go towards providing funding for private schools.
