Michael's Mitsubishi Electric Air Conditioners Review & Verdict
Michael Bloch covers the latest developments in home electrification for SolarQuotes.
I had a relatively late model Mitsubishi Electric air-conditioner in a home I lived in off and on for a few years — a split system with a single head unit. It did the job fine regardless of temperatures ranging from near freezing to mid-40's — and didn't seem too expensive to run. This was helped along by the fact the house had good insulation in the ceilings, walls and floor, and low-E glass.
The only gripe I had was a highly annoying squealing noise in the outdoor unit when the air-conditioner was turned off and there was a stiff southerly/south-westerly breeze. But from what I understand, this is rare and not necessarily confined to Mitsubishi — the outdoor unit was in a very exposed elevated position. I'd be happy living with another Mitsubishi Electric air-conditioner.

About Mitsubishi Electric
Mitsubishi Electric Australia is a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (Japan), which was founded in 1921.
Mitsubishi Electric has its fingers in a number of consumer electronics pies, including residential and commercial air conditioning. It's often and understandably confused with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, which also manufactures air conditioners, but reportedly has more of a focus on budget and commercial solutions.
Mitsubishi's association with Australia kicked off way back in 1967 when the firm set up an office in Sydney. In 1974, Mitsubishi Electric established a wholly-owned subsidiary here, Melco Australia Pty Ltd. In 1982, the name was changed to Mitsubishi Electric Australia Pty Ltd (MEAUST). The following year, the firm started selling window/wall and split system air-conditioners in Australia; and the rest as they say is history.

Mitsubishi Electric Air Conditioning Solutions
The company offers a huge range of air-conditioners, from single room products to whole-of-home solutions, including ducted and split systems.
Mitsubishi Electric air conditioners generally offer high energy efficiency — with a coefficient of performance COP ranging from 3.5 - 4.8 — quiet operation (most models), durability, and advanced features such as air purification and smart controls. They can be a little pricier than some of their competitors, but at least you know you're buying a brand backed by a company that's been around for a long time and *should* be still around for a long time to come.
MSZ-AP Series Particularly Popular
Launched in Australia in 2019, the MSZ-AP Series reverse-cycle wall mounted split system air-conditioners have proven to be a favourite with local buyers.
Available in capacities of 2.5 kW - 7.8 kW, MSZ-AP systems offers heating and cooling, and when the MSZ-AP25 specifically is used in ultra-quiet heating mode, operates at a noise level of 18 dB(A) inside; which is around the level of a whisper. Energy ratings are 3 - 4 stars for cooling (average climate) and 2.5 stars for heating.
The MSZ-AP uses R32 refrigerant (difluoromethane), which is a low global warming potential (GWP) alternative to R410A (a mix of difluoromethane and pentafluoroethane). Previously commonly used in air conditioning systems, R410A is now banned in new equipment brought into Australia using a refrigerant charge of 2.6 kg or less.
The MSZ-AP series have an inverter compressor for efficiency, a dual barrier coating to reduce dust and grease buildup on their surfaces, built-in Wi-Fi control, long airflow, and vertical/horizontal vane design. They have a guaranteed operating range of -10°C to 46°C in cooling mode and -15°C to 24°C in heating mode.
The MSZ-AP Series, MSZ-EF Series, and MFZ-KW Series are shipped with built-in Wi-Fi connectivity. And if you're looking for an especially small unit, the MSZ-AP 15/20 Mini Series launched in 2025 will be worth a look. At just 250 mm (h) x 760 mm (w), it has a cooling output operating at 1.5 / 2.0 kW.
Warranty Information
For the M Series, S Series, P Series and VRF systems used in residential applications, the warranty for manufacturing defects is 5 years from the date of installation of the product, which covers replacement parts and repair labour provided.
