Michael's Aquion Batteries Review & Verdict

Michael Bloch covers the latest developments in home electrification for SolarQuotes.

Aquion's salt water home battery was an interesting home energy storage solution that was only available for a few years; and nothing similar has been available since production ceased. Meanwhile, lithium-ion tech has not only survived, but thrived and continues to evolve.

Aquion Batteries: Pros & Cons

About Aquion

US company Aquion Energy manufactured a non-flammable “salt water battery” (Aqueous Hybrid Ion – AHI) system boasting 100% depth-of-discharge capability among its benefits.

Other claimed benefits were non-toxicity of the materials used in their salt water battery, extremely low fire risk, and the ability to be fully discharged and left unused for long periods without deterioration.

The Aquion battery had a 5 year warranty, followed by a three year pro rata warranty.

The company collected all sorts of accolades, and then suddenly in March 2017 it filed a voluntary petition under Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code as it couldn't raise the funding needed for continued operations. After it emerged from bankruptcy in July the same year with new owners, it reportedly wasn't supporting existing products in any way, and all existing warranties were void.

As for its production facilities at a former Sony and Volkswagen assembly plant in East Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, those were closed with the intention of shifting production to China. And that was the last we heard about the firm.

If you'd like to learn more about these salt water batteries, we published an in-depth Aquion review back in 2016.

Very few of these batteries would have been installed in Australia - but if you have one, we'd be interested to hear how its been doing.

No other salt water batteries have made it into commercial production since the Aquion as far as we know, and lithium-ion continues to rule the roost in terms of home energy storage. Learn more in our comprehensive guide to home batteries.

I had Aquion batteries installed 6 years ago and have found them excellent. I had the maximum amount of storage that could be installed to a system that was still able to be connected to the grid. Since then I have doubled my generation capacity and would love to double my storage but I am not impressed by the Lithium batteries which remain on the market. One of the issues however is with the controlling software which is tuned to a maximum of 3% discharge to support Lithium batteries. Aquion batteries can be regularly run down a long way further without detriment but the software doesn't easily allow it.
