A relative newcomer to the Australian home solar energy storage scene, we haven’t had a lot of feedback on ESY Sunhome batteries from our installer partners or local customers as at early March 2025.

ESY Sunhome Batteries: Pros & Cons

  • Prompt technical support.
  • Still relatively new to Australia so can't be sure of long-term performance.

About ESY Sunhome

Founded in 2004, China's ESY Sunhome started out manufacturing batteries for small devices, then expanded into a supplier of Battery Management Systems (BMS). In 2021, the firm launched it first home energy storage solution.

Company Info

ESY Sunhome has a 12,000m² facility in Shenzhen, China and boasts 800 engineers and assembly line staff. In addition to China, the company has offices in Germany, Italy, and here in Australia; which it opened in 2023.

ESY Sunhome HM6 Batteries

The firm launched its HM6 series home storage system products in January 2023. In Australia, the single-phase HM6 series has been approved by the Clean Energy Council for local use.

This is an all-in-one battery with a maximum power output of 6kW. A modular system, it can be expanded from 5.12kWh usable capacity to 30.72 kWh using 5.12kWh modules. The base model has dimensions of 600 x 305 x 778 mm and weighs 93 kilograms. A full stack (6 modules) weighs in at 343kg.

The HM6 has an operating temperature range of -25 - 60°C (derating above 45°C), so assuming it is kept out of direct sunlight it can handle sizzling Australian summer temperatures. The battery has an IP66 ingress rating.

Rated output power in backup mode (all models) is 6kW. ESY Sunhome has informed us the battery is able to charge from solar during a blackout.

Monitoring is via the ESY Sunhome App, which the firm says also allows for complete control over the battery's operational status. The app leverages the power of AI to provide "real-time" solutions by considering factors such as user electricity consumption, weather conditions and electricity prices.

Warranty Information

The HM6 warranty is for 10 years or until it provides an energy throughput equal to 21,500 kWh per 5.12kWh module.  This means if the battery discharges 5.12kWh per day per module, its warranty will last the full 10 years.  The battery would have to discharge an average of 5.9kWh per day per module for its warranty to end in under 10 years.  This is more throughput than a number of popular batteries allow.  The warranty also promises the battery will maintain a minimum of 70% of its original capacity while it applies.

The warranty requires the battery to have a stable internet connection and says the owner must inform ESY Sunhome immediately if there is an internet network outage.

Really happy so far - but a few years to go yet.

Installed By

My battery and solar panel installed by smart energy answers have been extremely disappointing. I originally ordered the 3kw solar panels to add to my existing 6.7kw panels and I ordered a 30kw ESY battery. Price seemed pretty good. Sadly I did not do enough research on the battery being provided. I paid a deposit around the 19th of July, and provided pictures of the roof, etc and specifically asked for panels to be facing west to maximise the afternoon sun. Over the coming weeks they asked for more pictures of various areas related to the location of the batteries or panels. Smart Energy answer then told me that they were out of my battery and I would need to wait a month or two. The site where the battery would go was a gravel area, they advised I would need to put it on a concrete pad, the said they could do that for $150 +GST. The concrete pad they did put down looked similar to those pavers that sell at bunnings for under $5 each. The installation did not happen until october. it took a day to do, they basically handed me a brochure and left. I have a power monitor so over the following days I could see that I was not getting any power from the battery, I could not connect to the battery via the app, nor could I see any signs that the battery was even working. Each time I contacted Smart energy I got responses from someone who will call you back. they constantly failed to do so, I also stated that the purpose of the additional 3kw of panels was to  maximize the afternoon sun so was concerned that the panels on my flattish roof were far lower than my existing panels reducing the amount of afternoon sun they would get. On the 23rd of october I was given instructions to look for a specific switch inside my meter which did not exist, instead I had a switch called mail switch essential services in the off position, i asked if that was the same switch, they did not know. multiple phone calls and emails resulted in the usual response that someone will call, which seldom happened. In early December a tech came by to wire up the main switch essential services because of constant customer complaints. The fact that they failed to do in october and had i not complained may never have had it configured. The electrician advised the 30kw battery i bought could only supports one or two appliances in a blackout. he wired in two switches into the "main switch essential services" for emergency battery support, he did not know what he wired up, nor do I. To find out I will need to turn off the power and try to test my entire house to find out what works. I raised the issue of the panel height and he said that they are easily adjusted and that they should have people in the area tomorrow who can fix it, but tomorrow never came. I again raised it with Smart energy and they advised I would have to pay to have the panels raised. The battery is connected to my wifi, it seems to go off line from time to time (when we have power outages) and i need to resync it which does not work all the time. it appears the app does not store the password so that if it loses internet I needed to manully re enter the wifi password to reconnect. then there is the fact they did not leave a diagram of the connections they made which by law they need to do and leave with me. and then we have being unable to actually use my battery properly. the ESY app only allows to me to look at data and identify times i dont want to sell to the grid. it does not allow me to sell to the grid when i want to. for that i need another account which they have not provided to me, nor even mentioned existed. so i cannot export to the grid when i want to. i have a two phase house with a one phase inverter, so most of the time after the sun goes down i have a very full battery looking after one phase while the other buys from the grid at wholesale prices. if i can program it to sell a small amount of power during the peak after hours time it provides an offset for the power i draw down on the second phase. but i cannot access it, and when asked about this and the other things the response is essentially someone will get back to you.

We've been very happy with this battery so far. It seems to work correctly.
My only small gripe is that it seems to draw a constant 90W from the grid which is normal from what I understand, just not something I knew about prior to install.
Otherwise it seems to meet our needs, the app works fine, and we're very much enjoying not having to buy electricity (apart from the (90W mentioned earlier) from the grid any more.

The ESY battery has performed as expected, although initially there were some app issues. When I raised the issue with the ESY support people, within that same day, four technicians attended personally to investigated the problem! They replace the WIFI dongle and the next day they remotely updated the firmware. ALL FIXED ! The app and system has worked perfectly since then.

Please read full review for all aspects of this install.

I have been very happy with the battery capacity to store excess solar product.
Further, system software tweaks, that I have requested, have been promptly remotely actioned by technical staff.

Maximum simultaneous output of solar panels (max. 8.8kW on their own) and battery (max. ~5kW on its own) is ~11kW. Just need to be mindful that they don't all combine in full. But still, love it.

Very impressed with the quality of the battery. The level of support from the manufacturer is good and they respond over the weekend as well.
There is a community home assistant integration which works well, only thing not controllable through the HA is curtailment, but that can be controlled via the app.
Software/firmware development is slow, but i think is progressing. Amber Smart Shift is allegedly coming, progress is slow and communication via public channels is none existant.
HM5 25kWh stack - Great install team, explained all the features & ensured I was aware of the various processes for the battery. Battery is doing it's job & soaking up kilowatts.
Great install and working well, no issues at all, app is good.
The battery and inverter have worked without an issue since being installed. Very happy with the product and will be getting a second bank of batteries ASAP.
ESY is a well built system that is of high quality. The app monitors everything in my home and displays it in an easy colour coded display. It has full control to sell power or charge based on a schedule. Other battery systems were too wide to allow installation as per the regulations in the space I had available. Th battery charges and discharges as needed throughout the day. Even in winter I can fully charge the battery on a sunny day. Highly recommended.
