Company Info
XESS's major partner supplying manufacturing and design services is Australian Energy Research Laboratories (AERL), which is led by XESS CTO Peter Watkinson. AERL has been in the industry since 1985.
As at late April 2025, the company's flagship products are the XESS ONE, which is a hybrid modular power system, and ION battery units, which combined create a full XESS energy storage and management system.
XESS ION
The XESS ION consists of XESSION-5120 rack-mounted battery modules and a cabinet system - the XESSION-ENCR6 (up to 6 battery modules) and XESSION-ENCR10 (up to 10 modules).
XESSION 5120 modules have 5.12 kWh capacity and contain LiFePO4 prismatic cells, with active balancing to prolong cell life. Scaleable to >300 kWh (six XESSION-ENCR10 in parallel fully loaded), the XESS ION offers -10 to +55°C charging and 0 to +55°C discharging range, and 1C charge and discharge. The ION features managed and self-managed operation, and will revert to self-managed mode if comms are lost.
XESS ION 5120 units have quick-connect battery terminals, a dual pole circuit breaker, an integrated electronic circuit breaker trip for cell protection in the event of a BMS failure, and installer field serviceable BMS.
While the IP rating for the XESS ION 5120 modules is IP40, the standard enclosures are only rated to IP20; so must be installed under cover. However, there is also an IP55 (outdoor rated) cabinet available that can cater to up to six 5120 modules.
The XESSION-ENCR6 measure 620 x 600 x 1270 mm and weighs 91 kg unloaded, while the XESSION-ENCR10 is 620 x 600 x 1890 mm and weighs 128 kg. XESSION-5120 battery modules weigh 44 kg each.
Inverter compatibility includes selected models (Managed operation) from: Victron, Deye, Noark, AERL and of course the XESS ONE. For self-managed operation, compatible inverter brands include certain Selectronic, SMA and Solis models.
Warranty Details
For the XESS ION, the warranty on the battery modules is 7 years, or 15.36 MWh throughput per module - whichever comes first. At the end of the warranty period, the module state of health will be no less than 70%.
An extra 3 years warranty - so 10 years in total - can be added if the warranty registered online. However, this only applies if an ION system is connected to XESS.Cloud for remote monitoring. But an extra 3 years can be purchased if site remote data isn't available.
For the enclosures, the warranty is 2 years - which seems a bit stingy.
