Michael's XESS Inverters Review & Verdict

Michael Bloch covers the latest developments in home electrification for SolarQuotes.

Brisbane's XESS is a relative newcomer to the local energy storage sector, but has a manufacturing association with another Australian firm that's been making solar products for decades - AERL. That company's CEO is also the CTO of XESS.

Company Info

XESS's manufacturing and design services partner is Australian Energy Research Laboratories (AERL). AERL has been around since 1985 and is headed by Peter Watkinson, whose father started that company. AERL developed the precursor to what would become the world's first Universal Maximum Power Point Tracker (MPPT).

XESS ONE

Combining solar input and intelligent energy management, the XESS ONE is a hybrid modular power system designed for primarily for off-grid applications and for use with XESS ION battery systems. It's available in single- and three-phase.

A single XESS ONE (single phase) is scalable from 4.8 kW to 9.6 kW AC output, from 8 kW to 16 kW PV input, from 4 kW to 8 kW PV charge and from 5.4 kW to 10.8 kW AC charge. It has an AC output surge current rating of 200% for 2 seconds and 125% for 15 Seconds. Maximum PV input power is up to 200% oversize.

Up to four ONE units can be installed per phase in parallel, with each working independently and as part of a cluster. Integrated communications and control features include Canbus, WiFi, Bluetooth, Ethernet, RS485, and there are 2 x relay outputs.

The XESS ONE offers black start functionality with both solar panels and a generator, and hot-swappable inverter technology allows uninterrupted swapping or adding more inverter modules.

The XESS ONE is IP53 rated, measures 1313 x 660 x 122 mm and weighs 42.8 kg - 57.6 kg. Its operating temperature range is -20°C to +50°C.

Monitoring is via XESS Monitor (Cloud Portal) & XESS View (Mobile App).

Warranty Details

For the XESS ONE, the warranty is 7 years + 3 years when the warranty is registered online, when installed with XESS ION batteries, and connected to XESS.Cloud for remote monitoring. However the extra 3 years can be purchased if site remote data is unavailable.
