Company Info
Headquartered in Melbourne and 100% Australian-owned, Thermann claims more than a million of its hot water systems (all types) have been installed across Australia. Thermann is backed by Australia's largest plumbing supplier - Reece. It appears both Stiebel Eltron and Dux have produced units rebranded to Thermann for Reece.
Thermann Hot Water Heat Pump System Choices
The company offers two heat pump lines - integrated (all-in-one) systems available in 200L and 285L capacities, and split systems in 160L, 250L, 315L and 400L capacities.
Thermann Integrated Heat Pump Features
- Coefficient of Performance (COP) of 4.63.
- 4 modes: schedule (good for use with solar), holiday, boost and rescue.
- Built-in Wi-Fi.
- Controls on unit and can also be controlled via app.
- In-built element as a backup.
- –6°C up to 45°C operational range. Outside of these ranges, the backup element kicks in.
- Inbuilt ‘active defrost’ function.
- R290 (propane) refrigerant.
- Designed and manufactured in Australia.
Thermann X (AKA Hybrid) Split Heat Pump Features
The latest X models feature:
- Quiet operation (37dB).
- Coefficient of Performance (COP) of 5.08.
- Controller on the front of the water heater for basic settings or app to change modes, settings and view other system information.
- –6°C up to 45°C operational range.
- Block out mode for areas with on and off-peak tariffs as well as use with solar PV.
- CO2 refrigerant.
- Heat pump unit manufactured in Japan.
- Australian made storage tank.
The X's tank can be installed indoors or outside, and the heat pump unit can be up to 5 metres vertically, or 15 metres horizontally away from the storage tank. Thermann X split heat pumps utilise R744 ( CO2 - carbon dioxide) refrigerant gas. Aside from a lower global warming potential, the use of CO2 makes for a more efficient heat pump - but also more expensive.
Note that in 2024, there was a recall on certain Thermann X systems due to a potential shock hazard. Details of the recall can be found here.
Warranty Details
According to the company's web site, the Thermann integrated hot water heat pump system is accompanied by a warranty of 7 years on the tank, 3 years on tank labour, 3 years on refrigeration and components labour, and 1 year on other parts and labour.
For the split system, there's 6 years warranty for the heat pump system, 10 years on the tank and 2 years on parts and labour (we haven't sighted a full warranty document for the split).
However, if purchased and installed from 1st July 2023 through Victoria's Solar Homes program, Thermann heat pumps are warranted for a minimum five years on all components.
