Michael Bloch covers the latest developments in home electrification for SolarQuotes.

Autarco is a Dutch company that once supplied Clean Energy Council approved solar inverters for the Australian home solar market; but it appears that ended around 2017.

Given there's an Australian address but no local phone number, chances are the address is the company's accountant's office.

Company Info

Autarco was founded in 2011 in Hong Kong by Roel van den Berg and the firm was soon making sales in Australia. The company moved back to the founder's home country — the Netherlands — in 2012, and that has been its base ever since.

Fun fact: Autarco's name comes from the word ‘autarky', which has its roots in a Greek term meaning self-sufficiency. The founder of Autarco came up with the name while holidaying on Queensland's Great Barrier Reef.

Autarco Inverters In Australia

There are currently no Clean Energy Council approved Autarco solar inverters. But when there were, the approved models were from the Autarco S series in 1.5 and 2 kW capacities.

But we haven't been able to locate an Autarco "S" series, even digging back through archives around the time the S models were CEC-listed. There was however an SX series, which perhaps was marketed in Australia as the S.

These were small and lightweight inverters that could be installed outdoors; measuring 270 x 433 x 105mm and weighing just 5.2 - 6.5 kilograms. Featuring a conversion efficiency of 96.70%, the SX series inverters had a single MPPT and an operating temperature range of -25°C to +60°C.

When Autarco-branded string solar inverters were available in Australia, it appears they may have been produced in China.

Warranty Information

Assuming the S was the same as the SX of the time, these Autarco inverters had a standard 5 year warranty that could be extended to 15 years. If you have a troublesome Autarco solar inverter and want to make a warranty claim, it's best to first try contacting the firm that supplied/installed it before trying the company's Netherlands HQ.

While CEC approved Autarco inverters aren't available in Australia currently, there are quite a few good brands that are. Learn more in our comprehensive solar inverter guide.
