Finn's Ambrion Batteries Review & Verdict

Finn Peacock has been a Chartered Electrical Engineer since 1998, and is ex-CSIRO

Who the heck is Ambrion, you may well ask. That's a really good question because the Ambrion website reveals very little about the company behind it. There are no contact details aside from a contact form, or even any warranty details beyond "10 years." We had to dig around elsewhere for this information.

On the datasheet from the Ambrion website for the Raybox HS2 battery, the "Made In China" reference is in tiny white text on a white background right at the bottom of the second page—so it’s invisible. What’s with that? Some good solar batteries (but also some garbage) are made in China.

Maybe it was a mistake, but none of this inspires confidence. I recommend skipping over Ambrion and looking at battery brands that are more transparent and have a solid home energy storage track record in Australia.

Ambrion Batteries: Pros & Cons

  • Lack of information and installer/customer feedback
  • Conflicting performance warranty details.

About Ambrion

The Ambrion website claims the Raybox solar battery for home applications is specifically adapted for Australia’s harsh conditions.

Company Info

There doesn't appear to be much solid information available about Ambrion batteries, but SolarBOS says it has been a supplier of Balance of System (BoS) products to the solar PV market in Australia since 2009.

Ambrion Raybox HS2 Solar Battery

Manufactured in China, the Ambrion Raybox HS2 is touted as an all-in-one solution that uses lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) cells. AC-coupled, it has a maximum 16A input current. It's a modular solution, expandable up to 20kWh using Ambrion Raybox BU2-5.0-HV1/5 units (up to 4 battery modules).

It has a UPS function switch time of less than 10ms, and depending on the model, rated AC power output ranges from 3kW to 6kW. The Ambrion Raybox HS2 has an operating temperature range of -10°C to +50°C (>45°C derating)

Monitoring features are offered via the SolarPlant app.

Warranty Information

The warranty document provided by SolarBOS states the Ambrion battery has a 10 year warranty from the date of installation.  It also gives an energy throughput limit.  If the battery's full usable capacity is discharged an average of once per day, this limit will cause the warranty will end after around 8.4 years.

SolarBos Pty Ltd also guarantees the battery will retain 70% of its nominal capacity for 10 years, or until the energy throughput limit is reached.

Performs well but wifi connectivity drops out from time to time

Installed By

1st battery went in and now we're waiting for the second upgrade. It's been a long wait but hopefully it will be here soon.
Customer service has been left a little wanting, getting info on the performance of the original battery is hard to get. Hopefully all will be resolved with the install of the 2nd battery.
We had the Ambrion battery installed in February 2024. There have been no issues with the unit and there is a noticeable drop in grid power usage along with lower costs. Too this point in time we are very happy with the battery. Also replaced the old solar panels with fifteen new panels.6.6klw
Some issues which I'm sure will be rectified soon. Installation was smooth and efficient.
We got the complete package… The solar panels and the Ambrion battery. The service and installation were excellent and we are in credit $300 with our energy provider. We can certainly recommend the Solar Battery Group. Keep up the good work guys.
The installer arrived on the planned date/ time and did the install in half a day.
Once installed the battery was in use immediately.
The software app give me good visibility of the status of the battery.
My only caveat is that the battery was advertised as a 10.4kWh battery. However, because the battery can only discharge down to 1.5 kWh, this means that the available battery storage is really 9kWh.
We have 10 kWh battery with 5 kw hybrid inverter. It was installed 15 months ago with 6.16 kw of new panels added to our existing, 12 year old 3 kw set of panels. The system has worked well, the phone app is easy to use and has good graphics.
We have experienced 2 technical issues which were resolved in a timely manner, when I spoke to the manufacturer technician.
Couldn’t be happier with our new Ambrion battery. The installation was smooth, the team was professional, and the system started delivering results from day one. We can now run most of our home in the evenings without touching the grid, and our quarterly bills have dropped by more than half. The app makes it so easy to monitor everything in real time, and I love seeing exactly how much we’re saving. It’s quiet, compact, and feels like a solid long-term investment. Highly recommend to anyone wanting more control over their energy and peace of mind during outages.
Very happy with my purchase. Just very slow to get my gov rebate
Works well so far ( 1 year ) . Only issue has been that it has been configured to only discharge to %20 capacity , so you only get 4kwh storage for every module not 5 ….
Seems to be getting better the longer i have it, taking nowhere near as much from the grid now
Battery seems good now that it's up and running just took longer than expected for that to happen
Very happy with the service. am waiting to increase my level of battery and hopefully will be eligible for a rebate from Government when going from 10 kWh battery to 20 kWh
Battery works well, updates online, though is undersized for our property .
Happy with Ambrion battery. Only thing I was not aware of at point of sale, which would apply to all batteries, is that they are programmed to only discharge 85% of the energy stored so as to preserve battery life. This effectively discounts the capacity of the battery.
Just need to update the communication links.

Otherwise seems to be very good.
Battery works well. I didn't get a larger battery as I'm not convinced that the imported electricity saved would justify the additional expense. Additional battery capacity provides diminishing benefits. Instead, I replaced the HWS with a heat pump, which is like a smaller additional battery and will hasten gas exit.
