Company Info

Quantum has its roots in University of Melbourne research back in the mid 1970's. Siddons Industries Ltd was granted a licence by the University in 1978 to further develop and manufacture its heat pump product. In 1998, Newcastle's Steve Harmon and Ron Perry purchased the company from the Siddons family; relocating it to the Newcastle area. They also purchased the Australian patent and the world manufacturing rights held by Quantum Energy Systems Pty Ltd and half of the world patent rights held through Quantum Energy Systems (International Pty Ltd).

While Quantum as a company is about as Australian as .. whatever .. their residential systems are manufactured in China.

Quantum Compact Range

The current Quantum Compact range of residential heat pumps consists of all-in-one (integrated) models with 150L (150-08AC6-290), 200L (200-08AC6-290), 270L (270-08AC6-290) and 340L (340-08AC6-290) capacity.

These systems have a Coefficient of Performance of 4.3 for the 150L and 250L models, and 4.53 for the 270L and 340L capacity. Quantum Compact units have an operating temperature range of -10 °C to +35 °C. The low end is lower than many other brands available in Australia, but so too is the high end; making these best suited to cooler climates. These systems have a claimed hot water production rate of 72 litres per hour at an ambient temperature of 20°C.

Among all the heat pump hot water systems we've looked at, Quantum's are among the noisiest at 50dB(A). They also don't have a backup element, Wi-Fi support or an app.

The refrigerant used in all Quantum Compact units is R290, which is propane. Among R290's benefits is a comparatively Low global warming potential (GWP) and decent energy efficiency. On the negative side, it is flammable; but reports of hot water heat pump systems using R290 catching fire are extremely rare.

Quantum Compact models range in dimensions from 1620 mm x 540 mm for the 150L unit, to 2200 mm x 650 mm for the 340L. Their net weights range from 100kg to 170kg.

Warranty Details

All the Quantum heat pump hot water systems above are accompanied by 5 years tank parts and labour warranty, a 2 years electrics and refrigeration parts and labour warranty and 1 year warranty on the PTR valve.
