Michael's Solaria Panels Review & Verdict
Michael Bloch covers the latest developments in home electrification for SolarQuotes.
Solaria started offering panels in Australia in 2020, and by 2024 at the latest it had exited our market for reasons unknown. The company manufactures what seem to be decent panels, so perhaps it was a matter of competition on pricing as Solaria modules weren't for the budget-conscious.
Solaria Panels: Pros & Cons
- No longer available in Australia
About Solaria
Solaria is a California-headquartered company that was founded back in 2000 in the US state of New Mexico.
Solaria built its first solar panel production line for utility scale PV applications in 2006 and commenced development of solar panels for home and commercial markets in 2014. The company has manufacturing facilities in the USA and South Korea, and has previously stated it holds or has pending hundreds of patents relating to PV materials, processes, applications, products, manufacturing automation and equipment.
Solaria PowerXT Panels In Australia
Solaria's flagship product was the PowerXT "Pure Black" range of solar panels that were introduced to the U.S. residential market in 2016 and became available in Australia in 2020.
As the name suggests, these were an all-black panel. The PowerXT boasted a conversion efficiency of up to 20.2% at the time of their release here. The company said among the XT's standout features were patented cell cutting and advanced interconnect process that reduced inactive space between cells, while also eliminating common points of failure.
PowerXT panels for the Australian market were produced in South Korea. There was also "AC" version of the PowerXT that had an Enphase microinverter embedded on the back of the module that was meant to be available in the second half of 2020, but we're not certain if these ever reached our shores.
When and why Solaria exited Australia isn't clear, but according to ASIC's database, ASIC proposed to deregister Solaria Australia Pty Ltd under section 601AB in August 2024 - and that went ahead. Section 601AB of the Corporations Act 2001 empowers ASIC to deregister a company if it fails to lodge returns, pay fees or if ASIC has reason to believe a firm is no longer carrying out business activities in Australia.
Warranty Details
Solaria offered a 25-year product/performance warranty when their panels were available here. The good news is the company appears to be honouring its warranty obligations in Australia. If you need to file a warranty claim, you can do so here via CompleteSolar (aka CompleteSolaria), which was acquired by Maxeon in 2023. But your first port of call for warranty issues should be the company you purchased the panels from.
