Finn's EV Switch EV Chargers Review & Verdict

Finn Peacock has been a Chartered Electrical Engineer since 1998, and is ex-CSIRO

EV Switch chargers are among the cheapest around, but I'll reserve my judgement until we've had more user and installer feedback. It's worth noting BYD was supplying these chargers for free with their electric vehicles sold in Australia, and quite a few of these freebies were subsequently sold on social media marketplaces for whatever reason.

Company Info

It's always interesting how often companies mention very little about themselves on their "about" pages, and EV Switch is no different. But we can tell you the company was registered in June 2023 and it looks like they launched their chargers in Australia in August 2024.  We're informed the person behind EV Switch at the time of writing is Luke Todd, who is also Chairman and Managing Director of the Australian distributor of BYD, EV Direct.

The company's stated mission is to deploy 100,000 chargers by the end of 2026. There's no information on where their chargers are manufactured, but it's a fairly safe bet it's China.

The EV Switch Charger

Promoted by the company as Australia's most affordable EV charging solution, the EV Switch is a single-phase unit offering 7kW charging capacity, and with an adjustable charge rate. It comes with a 7-metre-long tethered charging cable.

Communication modes supported are Wi-Fi 2.4G/Ethernet/4G (optional) and EV Switch supports the OCPP 1.6 protocol; which means it should be able to connect to third-party services - although this isn't always the case.

EV Switch offers four modes: general, mix, load balance, and ECO; with the latter three requiring a smart meter, CT, or both to monitor the current. ECO mode allows vehicle charging from your solar power system when output is sufficient.

Electrical protection includes: over current, residual current, surge, over/under voltage, over/under frequency and over temperature.

Available in black, grey or white, the EV Switch measures 344 x 192 x 100mm, weighs 2.7 kilograms and has a working temperature of - 30°C ~ +50°C. In Australia, temperatures can get well above 50°C in the sun, so it's important to ensure any charger is installed in a shaded position out of direct sunlight.

EV Switch is accompanied by an app called "Evchargo" which enables you to set a pre-defined scenario for your home and control how the unit operates.

EV Switch provides a warranty of "up to one year" on its chargers.
