Tim's Stiebel Eltron Hot Water Heat Pumps Review & Verdict
Tim Johnston covers hot water heat pumps and air conditioning for SolarQuotes.
Stiebel Eltron was once the leader of the heat pump hot water market in Australia. Unfortunately, despite boasting over 100 years of innovation, recent heat pump hot water units have been heavily criticised with concerns about reliability and customer support.

Company Information
From a small backyard workshop in Berlin, Dr Theodor Stiebel developed the first ring-type immersion heater in 1924. There were many milestones for what would become Stiebel Eltron to follow - among them was development and production of heat pump hot water systems starting in 1976.
Closer to home, Stiebel Eltron Australia kicked off operations in Melbourne in 1995 as a licensee and then became a subsidiary of its German parent in 2012.
Stiebel Eltron has manufacturing facilities in Germany, Sweden, Slovakia, Thailand and China. Its hot water heat pump systems appear to be produced in Slovakia.
Stiebel Eltron Heat Pumps In Australia
Stiebel Eltron has two offerings of heat pump hot water units in Australia: the SHP and SHP Plus range.
SHP-O 200 / SHP-O 300
The SHP and SHP Plus models are available in 200 litre and 300 litre capacities. I suggest a 200 litre heat pump is suitable for a 2-3 person/bedroom home and the 300 litre unit suitable for a 4/5 person (3/4 bedroom) home.
These systems use R290 refrigerant (propane), which has a low global warming potential (GWP). Offering relatively quiet operation (45 dB(A)), both are solar PV compatible and have a 1.5kW backup element.
The SHP-0 200 measures 1478 x 650mm and weighs 114 kg, while the 300 is 1903 x 650mm and weighs 123 kg.
The main difference between the SHP and SHP Plus range appears to be features such as multiple Solar PV connections to help with integrating into a home of the future, multiple apps for homeowners and installers, as well as remote access monitoring for its service team. Homeowners can configure their unit via the MyStiebel App.
WWK 222/222H and WWK 302/302H (discontinued)
Stiebel previously offered the WWK range, which has now been discontinued. The WWK range was available in 220 and 302 litre capacities. The difference with the "H" models is they feature a 1.7kW element to aid hot water recovery in high use situations. The element was situated at the top of the cylinder, where it will assist heating approximately the top 80 litres.
The WWK range was discontinued in mid 2025. There is a great deal of negative feedback online about the WWK range.
The cynic in me suggests that Stiebel Eltron decided to discontinue this range due to product reliability issues. Unfortunately this doesn't necessarily mean that the newer SHP range is better or improved.
Warranty Details
When used for domestic purposes, the SHP range comes with a relatively healthy warranty: 7 years on the cylinder and condenser, 5 years on the refrigeration system, evaporator, valves, associated pipe work and electrical componentry and 1 year on the TPR valve.
Note that Stiebel Eltron may charge for any additional transport costs if the unit is installed more than 30 kilometres from its closest authorised service technician.

Serves a family of 4, with two young boys. Not uncommon to drain the tank of hot water when the whole family has showered in an evening and the dishes/ washing machine have been on but I was aware of that when choosing the size.
Never gotten around to fitting the relay from the solar but running costs have never pushed me to do so either.
