Michael's Eaton Inverters Review & Verdict

Michael Bloch covers the latest developments in home electrification for SolarQuotes.

An American company that manufactured grid-connect solar inverters in Taiwan, Eaton's products were available here during the earlier stages of Australia's home solar revolution — but haven't been sold in Australia for many years.

Eaton Inverters: Pros & Cons

About Eaton

Eaton is a US power management company offering solutions and applications in a highly diversified range of industries.

Eaton was founded in 1911 by Joseph Eaton, whose initial product was the first gear-driven truck axle. Today, the company has greatly expanded with a portfolio of electrical, aerospace, hydraulic and vehicle products and services.

As well as manufacturing solar inverters under its own brand for a while, the company also reportedly produced models for CMS, Orion and Conergy at its factory in Taiwan.

Eaton Inverters In Australia

Eaton ETN grid-connect solar inverters offered a conversion efficiency of up to 96%. The company claimed to offer higher power capacity than similar products of the same size. The Eaton ETN2000, a 2kW unit, measured 305 mm x 302 mm x 120 mm and weighed 11.3 kg.

Their inverters had an embedded LCD display showing complete status information, and featured natural convection cooling (i.e. no fan). While they could be used in locations where the ambient temperature is up to 55°C, the company recommended an ambient temperature range between 0~40°C.

When Eaton stopped producing inverters for the Australian market isn't clear. Eaton Electric used to have an Australian website too, but that also disappeared sometime in 2012/early 2013.

Warranty Details

We haven't come across an Eaton warranty document, but the company reportedly offered a 5- or 10-year warranty depending on the model. That being the case, it's unlikely any Australian installations are still covered. Rather than an expensive repair if yours has failed, it makes more sense to choose a new solar inverter from another brand.
