World's largest solar power project30th Apr 2013
The solar power sector has been hit with some exciting news as the world's largest solar power project is now under construction.
According to SunPower, the joint venture between MidAmerican Solar and SunPower Corp marked the beginning of its construction at the Antelope Valley Solar Projects - two projects co-located in Kern and Los Angeles counties in California, the US – with a community celebration.
The project is a 579 MW development, and is set to employ approximately 650 workers over a three year construction period.
According to SunPower, the Antelope Valley Solar Projects make up the world's largest solar power development under construction and when completed will provide enough energy to power approximately 400,000 Californian households.
"The Antelope Valley Solar Projects are already creating needed jobs and economic opportunity in local communities, while at the same time, providing direct, long-term environmental benefits," said Paul Caudill, president of MidAmerican Solar.
To put this in perspective, Australia's largest concentrating photovoltaic solar power station is currently under construction in Mildura, Victoria, with a capacity of 1.5 MW - that can power up to 500 average households.
