Tim Johnston covers hot water heat pumps and air conditioning for SolarQuotes.

Aquatech heat pumps are among the best value heat pumps in the market. They are affordable, low maintenance, quiet, come with a strong warranty and have a long track record stretching back to 2011.

Aquatech Solar Technologies Hot Water Heat Pumps: Pros & Cons

  • Affordable, but good quality.
  • Comparatively quiet.
  • Solar friendly.
  • Mid-market leading warranty of up to 7 years on parts and labour
  • Low maintenance.
  • I receive mixed reviews about the app and wifi connectivity. Customers with a need for remote operation through an app should perhaps consider alternatives.

Company Information

The company doesn't reveal much about itself or the firm's history on its website. Aquatech operates under both the "Aquatech" and "Hydrotherm" brand. Aquatech heat pumps are manufactured in China.

Aquatech Heat Pump Systems

Aquatech offers all-in-one heat pump hot water systems, meaning the tank and pump are combined in a single unit. Aquatech systems are among the quieter models we have listed on the SolarQuotes heat pump comparison table (but not the quietest).

All its systems are accompanied smart-home app, which can be used to monitor and control operations.

Aquatech has three units on the market. The RAPID/X6 with 225L of storage capacity, the DYNAMIC/X8 with 270L of capacity and the most recently launched model the Hydrotherm FUSION/X8 with 320L of capacity.

RAPID/X6

The RAPID/X6 boasts a 225L storage tank and is rated large load capable to Australian Standard AS/NZS 4234. Aquatech says it offers enough hot water capacity for a six-person home, but take that with a grain of salt - the Rapid X6 is ideal for a 1-3 person home.

I have a RAPID/X6 installed in my place providing hot water for my family of four: my wife (who loves a long shower), our two young daughters (who share a bath together) and me (I'm pretty quick). We probably should have gone for the larger DYNAMIC/X8 but I wanted to be a guinea pig to see if the 225L of hot water would be enough. The verdict: it provides enough hot water in summer, but sometimes the last shower runs a little lukewarm in winter (this is due to the colder winter temperatures cooling the hot water quicker).

The RAPID/X6 has an annual Coefficient Of Performance (COP) rating of 4.15.

The RAPID/X6 offers multiple heating modes, integrated timers to optimise electricity tariffs or for use with your solar power system, and wifi connectivity for monitoring.

Aquatech claims the RAPID/X6 has twice the industry standard for thickness and coatings for the tank, a galvanised casing, a 900W Toshiba compressor, microchannel heat exchangers and electronic expansion valves.

Its dimensions are 1580mm x 620mm and it weighs 105 kilograms empty. The RAPID/X6 uses R290 refrigerant (propane), which has low global warming potential.

While the RAPID/X6 runs on a standard 10 Amp circuit and can be plugged into an outdoor power point; some jurisdictions require hard-wiring.

DYNAMIC/X8

The DYNAMIC/X8 has a 268 litre tank and is suitable for households of 3 to 5 people. Aquatech tout the DYNAMIC/X8 as the "perfect partner" for solar power systems as the heating cycle can be adjusted to once per day during the times of the highest solar output; usually 10am to 4pm.

Like the X6, it uses R290 refrigerant (propane), has a heavy duty tank, galvanised casing and a Toshiba compressor; with a backup element (1800W) ensuring continuous supply of hot water. It has an annual Coefficient Of Performance rating of 4.20.

The X8 is slightly taller than the X6 with a height of 1810mm, and a diameter of 620mm. The Dynamic/X8 weighs 118 kg when empty.

HYDROTHERM FUSION/X8

Aquatech launched a larger model in late 2025, the Hydrotherm FUSION/X8. The FUSION/X8 comes with 320L of storage capacity and is suitable for families of 4 to 7 people. The FUSION/X8 is a big unit! It is 2.15m tall and requires 300mm clearance above the unit for servicing, so it is not a viable option for households with low eaves. The unit has a 650mm diameter which is larger than the other Aquatech models and most heat pumps which have a 600mm diameter, so it requires a larger slab (700mm x 700mm).

Similar to the RAPID/X6 and DYNAMIC/X8, the FUSION/X8 uses propane as the refrigerant, comes with a wifi app and a backup element (1600W), a galvanised casing and smart touch controller. The DYNAMIC/X8 weighs 146 kg when empty. The FUSION/X8 is rated an annual Coefficient of Performance of 5.0. It

Warranty Details

Aquatech offers a comprehensive 5-year warranty on the unit and labour. Aquatech offers an extra two years if customers leave a review on ProductReview within 3 months of installation. The review can be either positive or negative, although it must be said this probably skews Aquatech's reviews to the positive as most people have a good experience in the first three months. Still, customers might like the extra 2 year warranty for simply leaving a review.

If you own an Aquatech heat pump system, we'd welcome your review!

Looks great and not out of place

Early days but it appears better built and needs to run less than the previous system.

Installed Solar and changed from Gas hot water to electricity
The heat pump Aquatech x8 was assessed and recommended and quoted as adequate for our needs. Price was reasonable and installation included. Cost was more than covered by Solar Rebate (panels/battery)
The installation was done quickly and efficiently (Same Day Hot Water).Very tidy installation and unit looks good.
After two days the water was not hot enough and rang installer - will be there this afternoon.
A Valve replaced and hot water temperature immediately improved to satisfactory.
The heat pump noise is audible but not excessive - remote location so not a problem
The Solar battery seems to be able to keep up with the hot water usage on cloudy days so it is costing nothing to heat the water. The Heat pump seems adequate to complete the task quickly and efficiently.
The Aquatech has a variety of timing options and can be set to take advantage of peak solar
It only remains to be seen how long the Aquatech unit lasts as it passes all the other requirements
Ok, first the good bits. Reasonably priced unit, which is fairly quiet - perhaps even quite quiet. Also fairly efficient, and doesn't use a heap of power. It's also Solar friendly and I've got mine connected to my Solar and it has a couple of different modes, and an App that you can (supposedly) use to program on/off times, temperature etc.
However, 5 months after installation the App failed. The installer came to inspect and spoke to Aquatech who advised them there was a known issue with the App, but they were building a new App and it was expected to be completed 3 months later. The installation company was not aware of the issue with the App; Aquatech hadn't bothered to inform anyone.
Anyway, that was 8 months ago and still no new App. Two weeks ago, the unit stopped working completely and the installer came out and replaced the PCV (I think that's what it was called; anyway it's the 'brain' of the unit) as apparently there's a known issue with the part, and Aquatech is (apparently) replacing them as they fail. So no recall or anything, and in my case they just let the unit fail on a Friday so you're without hot water until Monday when your installer can get out to look at it. Now, two weeks later the unit is not switching on, or off, as programmed, and I'm doing it manually until the installer can get out here, yet again. Aquatech itself has not been at all helpful, always fobbing me off whenever I contact them. It seems to me that they have no interest whatsoever in customer satisfaction
I would not buy this unit again.
Very happy with my Aquatech heat pump that I installed to replace my instantaneous gas heater (this required extra plumbing which added to costs - be sure to ask the questions). There's 3 of us in the house but two are teenagers who love their long showers so I went for the slightly larger X8 model. It does exactly what it's meant to do. In the kitchen my hot water is hotter than it was before which is very welcome because it's actually - finally! - hot enough to clean a dirty pot or pan (while not causing any scald burns). The timer and wifi connection work just fine (admittedly the user interface is not the fanciest one around but it gets the job done). I've got solar panels and ample power generation to run the heat pump during daylight hours (basically for free).
One of the reasons I went for Aquatech was because of the longer warranty on the electric heating element. Ironically, to date I've not had any need to use the hybrid or electric functions that require the heating element.
My only caution would be on operating noise - if you are sensitive I would recommend careful placement. I'm not bothered by the noise but it's certainly audible so be careful what windows you place it next to, especially if you work shifts and sleep during sun-up.
My installation was tricky (old house, tiny lot etc) and I was very happy with the customer service I received to get this right in the end.
Owner as a licensed plumber installed.
System Rapid X-6 Gen 2 Installed by Gavin Black of Melbourne Heat Pumps in November 2022. Replaced old gas fired unit in same footprint. Has worked very well. But I would say serves 1-3 people is more accurate than up to 6 people in Melbourne conditions. Had no app available then and cannot talk to an app now. Have to manually set heat periods but not hard.
Gavin put in a purpose built outdoor electric plug which is better than trying to drape the unit's cord in through kitchen window. Had no trouble at all with it. Not noisy and you can choose your heating times in any case. Got the 7 year warranty by writing a review on Product Review site soon after purchase. This is a better time to write a review with 3 and a half years usage and no incentive!
Installed 2.5 years ago no issues at all, connected to solar panels means free hot water, only issues are connecting to app. Had to ring aquatech to reprogram settings on unit, not app. Unit came with very little drain hose, I had to purchase a drain hose myself I think it should have been supplied by installer. Discharge water should not be left to go under concrete slab. Unit is very quiet when running and good quality components. Toshiba compressor and impressed current anode means very little maintenance required.
Plenty of hot water, good pressure.
Had system installed 2.5 years does a great job at heating water, app is not easy to understand. Better instructions in manual would be helpful, had good help from aquateh setting WiFi. I'm using solar panels to run unit. I should recover installation cost very soon , I have no gas at home this alone saves $250 per year just on service charges. I now have installed a home battery my electrify cost are almost zero for the last 18 months. Did not come with long drain hose, not good
I have chosen this model due to its low noise levels and contained cost. It did not diasappoint: it is very silent and barely noticeable when on. It recharges in less than 1h with solar power. Installation was straightforward in 2 h. I am very happy with its performance and its warranty which I got extended to 7years with a Product Review post.
DYNAMIC/X8
Simply excellent in all aspects - quieter than we expected and similar to air conditioning noise levels. Excellent installation by Greenlogic who also supported us with solar and batteries.
Recharges in 2 hours in spring summer
LED controls easy to use, and only ever used on solar so no power charges
All good, but the App to operate it proved difficult to get working
I had an Aquatech Rapid X6 installed in December 2025. Very happy with the hot water and the noise level of the unit. Whilst I can hear it when operating in the closest bedroom, I have no issue with this. Great addition to go with my solar electricity.
The setting of temperatures and timing are poorly designed and non intuitive, nothing the supplier can do about that the manufacturer needs to remember that the “average joe/joan” doesn’t interact with this stuff every day, otherwise the recommended supplier provided excellent backup and the installation was very neat and timely.

Affordable. Very cheap to run. Acceptably quiet. Easily monitored and controlled with a phone app.
Installed Fusion X8 but so far hasn't been able to get it to talk to WIFI
Easily programmable and quiet operation
