Michael's Qcells Inverters Review & Verdict
Michael Bloch covers the latest developments in home electrification for SolarQuotes.
Qcells operated in the mid- to high-end of the market before it decided to leave the Australian solar scene in 2024 due to extreme market competition. The company pledged to honour its warranty commitments in Australia, which will go on for some years.
Qcells Inverters: Pros & Cons
- Company has exited Australian sales
About Qcells
Qcells was best known for its solar panels until the company built up a significant energy storage arm, including the production of inverters for its batteries.
Australian Contact Details
In February 2024, Hanwha QCELLS Australia announced it would be closing its business in Australia and New Zealand. However, as at early 2025, the company still lists an Australian contact for energy storage customers and has committed to honouring warranties.

Company Info
Qcells was founded in 1999 in Bitterfeld-Wolfen, Germany. But these days it is headquartered in Seoul, South Korea. It became Hanwha Qcells after it was acquired out of bankruptcy in August 2012 by South Korea's Hanwha Group. Even before the Hanwha acquisition, the company had an office in Australia, which it set up in 2010.
Qcells Inverters In Australia
Qcells launched a home solar and storage package on the Australian market combining solar panels, a hybrid inverter, and lithium-ion battery storage in 2019 called the Q.HOME.
This was followed by the Q.HOME+ battery and then the Q.HOME CORE A4. Australia was chosen for the international debut of Q.HOME CORE in 2022.
Then came the A5 battery system. featuring a Q.VOLT A5S inverter. Manufactured in the Republic of Korea, this inverter offered 5kW output power, weighed 33.9 kg, had an ingress rating of IP65 (so suitable for outdoor use) and an operating temperature range of −20C to 60C.
The Q.VOLT A5S had backup power capabilities, with a switchover time of less than 0.1 second. Among its other features was "dynamic optimizer mode", which involved an algorithm maximising energy yields by incorporating real-time weather information.
Warranty Details
The inverter for the Q.HOME and Q.HOME+ is covered by a 10-year warranty, and the Q.HOME CORE A4S/A5S are covered by a 15-year product warranty.
While Qcells has ceased supplying goods into Australia, warranties related to their products purchased in Australia or New Zealand are managed by a service centre located in Sydney, which can be contacted using the details provided above. But your first contact for warranty issues should be your installer, as they also have warranty responsibility.

Alterations were then made to the powerboard, installing a submeter for each inverter, which both failed within 18 months. The inverters were not able to communicate with the grid, we had limited capacity for battery utilisation and unstable and unreliable feed-in readings.
Through this process we engaged with our installer, who was initially helpful but claiming Qcells was the issue and they had no solutions. We escalated and engaged with Qcells while they still had an Australian office, and while helpful, their fixes required flying an electrical engineer to site and lasted less than 18 months. At this point we were back to having no grid connection and unable to utilise our solar panels at all.
Since then, with ongoing major and minor failures, a refund was sought and obtained for the inverters and batteries.
If this had been our first solar experience, I don't know that we would ever recommend this path. We have had solar previously and know it can work seamlessly. We selected what was promoted as a higher quality system at a premium cost. I really wish we had chosen a simple, no fuss system that didn't break down or rely on complex fixes.
