Smooth Sales, Vanishing Service, and Technical Negligence

Don’t let the competitive pricing fool you; the "savings" come at a high cost to service and safety. I have had two major issues that prove ZipSolar prioritises sales over quality:

Poor Installation Standards: They installed my inverter and battery in a spot that receives 2-3 hours of direct afternoon sun. Despite the installer claiming it was "fine," the unit runs very hot. This is a clear disregard for equipment longevity and manufacturer guidelines. The customer rep said they are chasing up with the FoxEsSS on this issue, and it has been 4 months with no response.

The "Review Trap": Like others have noted, they are incredibly pushy about getting a 5-star review on the day of installation, before you have even turned the system on. I refused, wanting to see the system in action—and I am glad I did.

Failed After-Sales Support: I paid for blackout protection. The installer admitted he "forgot to activate it" and promised to return. It has now been 6 months. The installer has blocked/ignored my calls, and the company offers nothing but empty promises about "chasing them up." I am not even sure if they installed the blackout protection.

Bottom Line: I did not get what I paid for. I am now forced to spend more money out of my own pocket to fix a system they failed to complete. If you value a warranty or a functional system, look elsewhere.

Terrible Terrible terrible

After reviewing the system design and the advice provided, it became clear that the information and service provided to us was inaccurate and misleading.
They originally advised that a 10kW inverter was required for the installation. This advice was later changed to a 5kW inverter without proper explanation or technical justification. As a result, the system has been installed in a configuration that does not allow the solar panels to properly feed into the battery.
The solar panels should have been connected directly to a correctly sized 10kW inverter to ensure proper system operation. Instead, the current setup has resulted in a system that does not perform as represented.
In addition, I was contacted by another representative associated with this company who attempted to pressure me into paying an additional $2,000 to rectify issues that arose due to the incorrect advice originally provided.
This conduct raises serious concerns under the Australian Consumer Law.
Given these issues, I would not recommend this company

Zip Solar Solar and Battery installation

Zip Solar recently installed 8.55kw JaSolar (475w x 18), FoxEss 28.8kwh battery (Eq4800 L6) and FoxEss H1-5-G2 5kw inverter.

First contact was late July 25, installed 28 Jan 26. So 6 months start to finish, some of the delay being my fault but mostly due to the explosion of demand caused by the battery rebates that started in July.

Given the ups and downs I give them 30/40 and would still do this again with Zip Solar and would recommend them.
I provide some honest feedback for 2 reasons, so Zip know where they should improve and perhaps more importantly so people have realistic expectations of what can and will happen along the way and make their decisions accordingly.

Overall I am extremely happy with this system which so far has meant almost total energy self sufficiency including charging an ev and the Unfortunately whilst I am overall happy, the sales team need to greatly improve because of all the avoidable issues along the way including not being able to provide a fixed price without the additional later costs that could easily have resulted in not being able to pay for the system.

Despite me sending many pictures of my quite old house and its sub standard meter box albeit with a smart meter inside, and detailed measurements and instructions of my array location and battery location requirements, the quote changed many times as they re-examined my information. Each time the quote changed so too did the install date, pushing out 3 weeks each change.

Initially the salesperson said I would not need a meter box upgrade but eventually it became evident that I would. So I hired my own electrician to replace the meter box and he informed me I had 3 phase even though I was not using it. I informed Zip and they immediately required me to upgrade to a 3 phase system at almost $3000 more and a different brand of battery and panels.

I learned elsewhere that 3 phase was optional and after some negotiation we reverted back to single phase. The original quote was for 18 x 440w panels but upon further evaluation Zip decided they would not fit on my roof but that 16 x 475w would fit, similar output similar price but a new quote, which pushed me back another 3 weeks on install. The new quote also increased my battery from 20kwh to 28kwh but a slightly cheaper brand. So slightly smaller array slightly bigger battery but another delay.

I had measured my roof many times and was confident 18 panels would fit so I asked them to bring 2 extra panels and if they fit I would pay extra if they didn’t no harm done. They fit, so I got an even bigger array than originally planned, my criticism here is they should have known this all along.

Final problem was upon installation the team confirmed my measurements that my inverter would be 15m from my meter box and only 5m is covered free. Every meter away after that had a $100 charge so I was facing an additional $1000 cost.
I sent detailed images and measurements to avoid this but apparently did not get a fixed firm price including all factors.

So my final additional bill included the 2 extra panels fitted and the extra cable became $1000, I expected to pay about $400 more for the 2 panels so let’s say they “discounted” my extra cabling to $600. I believe I should only have had to pay for the extra 2 panels but it is what it is and it makes arguing with them half way through installation difficult.

So my advice to Zip, figure out how to cost in everything when assessing jobs so that these nasty additions don’t happen.

Installation almost burnt my house to the ground

Absolutely disgraceful. Zip Solar’s installation nearly burned my house down.

After Zip Solar installed my system, their poor-quality installation caused my meter box to catch fire. This was not a minor issue — it was serious enough that Fire and Emergency had to be called to contain the fire. Let that sink in. My home was put at real risk because of their negligence.

I am incredibly lucky that I still have a house. This could have ended far worse.

The stress, fear, and disruption this caused is unacceptable, and it all comes down to substandard workmanship and a complete lack of care. I trusted Zip Solar to do the job safely and professionally, and they failed in the most dangerous way possible.

Never use Zip Solar. No savings are worth risking your home, your safety, or your life.

I should have stopped after the quoting experience...

This company is extremely unprofessional.

1. Their sales team have zero knowledge of the products they are offering. We were told they could add more panels, then said they couldn't, and the reasoning they provided was incorrect (first they said because of the inverter - wrong, then because of Western Power - wrong, then we finally got the correct answer).

2. They changed inverter models between quotes without informing. Then denied it at first.

3. The STC credit amount they offer is well below market rate. They offered $35/STC, where every other installer offers $38, with the market sale rate being $40 (at the time of the quote).

4. Once their installers showed up to site, they forced a $350 increase in the price because of where they needed to install the inverter (in a shaded area). The location chosen was in our patio, and space that we use often. Other suitable locations would have been the back of the house out of site, and a small nook protected from the sun. The quote I agreed to was for a compliant installation, and it is their own fault for not actually attending the house for a pre-install/quote inspection. The additional cost for the inverter install was a 10% increase to the original quote.

No issues so far

Overall package from Zip was well priced. Picked up a 10kw system with 20kw battery and two of the house circuits on power out back up for similar price to quotes received through SolarQuotes. Previous experience with follow up issues has made us not believe the dearer installers are necessarily going to help out down the track, though I think they are more likely to if they are mentioned favourably on SolarQuotes.
20kw battery isn't sufficient for us. We knew this. It will dramatically reduce our bill though. Our self sufficiency was running above 90% but a couple of big trips has meant the EV was charging overnight and has dragged that down.
Only installed about 6 weeks ago.
Rough calculations indicating pay off in 3.5 to 4 years. (our calculations)
Contractors were good. No problems so far with install and operation.
No bullying BS form Zip before the sign up at all, which was a shock. Sorry for the pun.
Cheers

Only issues were with Energex.. they don't appear to want solar in embedded networks. Zip and the subcontracted installer were both excellent. The system went in at the first attempt after months of bureaucratic delays, came up immediately and has run faultlessly ever since. I've seen complaints about the app being difficult to configure but I had no problems but then again I have an IT background. 100% happy with our solar system!

Best price and timely installation.

These guys did a great job, knocked a few thousand off the going rate and installed within a fortnight...
Others were suggesting 2 month lead times.

Good install average outsourced call centre

Salesman knowledge average.
Nothing wrong with their attitude just understanding what they are saying and long distance connections made it hard.
All grid connections and compliance were fine.
Make sure you read up about regs and specs so you as the customer are informed.
This also helps with explaining to installer where you would like inverter/battery location vs regulations, which dictate certain distances from inverter and battery etc.

Good installation., but somethings weren’t made aware to me upon paying deposit.

I had old panels to be removed and I presumed it’s part of the quoted price. It was not. So I had to pay for that. The rest was good, but a bit on panel positioning were not spelt out on my thought. But system is great and producing good energy; my bills have dropped off significantly, but no battery, for overnight storage.

Excellent installation by a great installation team

The sales process was efficient, clear and concise. Knowledgeable, able to answer all of my questions. Unfortunately, the installation occurred about 2 months after the original planned date due to some unforeseen circumstances. However, when a new date was locked in, everything went well for the installation. The installation team arrived early, ahead of time, and got to work with no fuss, very punctual. Everything was installed without a hiccup, and cleaned up well, there was no mess at all left behind. Lovely clean neat installation, very professional. This has only just been installed, so this is early days I realize, but so far brilliant.

Original Review on 05-08-2022:

Quality solar system for the best price

The sales/quoting process provided all of the information needed to compare quality, prices and systems.

The installation was completed on the scheduled day and the installers were very punctual, but did leave some bits and pieces of rubbish for me to clean up which was a little disappointing.

The installer gave me a run through of how the system works and advised that I would need to contact my power provider to install an upgrade to my meter box. I was also provided with a manual for the inverter.

Zip Solar are great at selling their product though after sales support is lacking and requires some work. I suggest you purchase elsewhere and check if they are a licensed solar selling retailer as per your states regulations which I wish I knew was a thing before purchasing. Having the system installed by a licensed installer is not good enough, the business needs to have a license also.

The installer(Not a ZIP Solar employee) I had on the day was good and explained everything well though.

Zip Solar.

Sales and quoting was quick, a few phone calls but respected my time to make a decision.

Installation was quick with excellent communication and contact made quickly with part supply issues.

Extra consumption monitor added as recommended from here.

Still early days but looking great so far.

Price came in cheaper with same parts used and had a few referrals from friends.
