Finn's Fox ESS Batteries Review & Verdict

Finn Peacock has been a Chartered Electrical Engineer since 1998, and is ex-CSIRO

Fox ESS batteries are selling like hot cakes, due to their stackable design and low price.

I don't have enough information or experience with the hardware to form an opinion on their quality or robustness in harsh Australian conditions.

My advice is to wait until they've been through a couple more Australian summers before committing to putting them on your home.

I had researched home batteries for a few years. Looked at Tesla, BYD and more recently, Sigenergy, then I found FoxESS.

There were various reports about FoxESS not being reliable but further research showed it was heresay from installers with no experience in Fox and were pedalling much more expensive battery options with lesser quality battery cells, often a warranty that didnt cover the whole system or would only cover Cells and other parts for 2 to 3 years.

The Good:
FoxESS Battery cells are made by the same company in china who makes the cells for BYD, Tesla etc..
FoxESS is owned by a company who is the largest exotic metals processing plant in china.
The price is half the cost of other home battery systems.
It provides full home backup with solar charging during grid outages when DC Coupled (Up to 45.7amp for the 10kw inverter).
Availability was within a week for the KH10 single phase inverter and 42kwh battery
10 year warranty covers all of the battery and inverter.

The Bad:
Fox Support is based in China and communication is via very broken English
I think this is an outstanding battery for the price. Construction seems rugged, and the software seems pretty good (although I have no experience of other brands - that's where Solar Quotes comes in!)
I don't understand why the huge caution with many Australian reviewers as Fox ESS have been selling their gear in Britain and Europe and elsewhere for a few years now.

So far any negatives may rest at the foot of the installers.
I had the 40kwh Fox ESS battery with 10kw inverter added to my existing 13kw solar system about 6 weeks ago by the same company that I had the solar installed 3 years ago.

So far, I am very happy with its performance. The capacity is more than enough for me. The 10kw throughput means quick charge and discharge.

The app lets me to set discharge/charge schedules. This is disabled ATM because I have switched to Amber.

The battery is supported by Amber smart shift, and I am currently letting Amber decide what to do, early stages yet but we will see how it goes. I can disable Amber's control if I wish. I will be interested to see what happens in winter.

It's not the prettiest battery on the market, it's like having a bar fridge in your driveway. If aesthetics is a thing, you might consider other options. But for the price / kwh and features and functions, I am very happy.
Excellent workmanship and attention to detail.
The team handled the installation of my solar + battery system with precision and care.
Everything was tested properly and performing as expected.
Very reliable and professional installer!
There are no issues and battery stack is much smaller than others for the same wattage.

The app to monitor is easy enough to follow.

I did a lot of research and there are no battery issues but need good installer and being cheaper with higher rebates means there are a lot more installers out there.
Battery is not as large as other brands and it is a no gimmick battery. We DC coupled it with Foxess Hybrid inverter and it works flowless. App and software options in app are really good. You can set up options like charging from Grid at certina times or exporting to Grid at certain times through app. And now Foxess is supported by Amber electricity as well. We had exisisting 10kw solar panel and installer removed old inverter as we wanted to DC couple the battery.
Very happy for choosing Fox ESS battery. Despite being a new entrant to the energy storage market, the build quality, easy to install and pair and beautiful design language have been quite aspiring! Really love the product!
