Finn's Sanden Hot Water Heat Pumps Review & Verdict

Finn Peacock has been a Chartered Electrical Engineer since 1998, and is ex-CSIRO

When we analysed online reviews for heat pump hot water systems in Australia prior to starting our own review pages, Sanden had relatively poor average scores. This was especially disappointing given Sanden systems are quite expensive. Subsequently, I wouldn't recommend Sanden to a friend at this point. But you'll find find heat pump hot water systems I would recommend here.

Company Info

Sanden Corporation (Sanden Kabushiki Kaisha) is a Japanese multinational company that celebrated its 80th Anniversary in 2023, which also marked 45 years of operation in Australia. The firm focuses on automotive equipment and electrical equipment manufacturing, and is particularly well- known for its air conditioning compressors and systems.

The firm established its hot water heat pump business in Australia in 2011.

About Sanden Eco Plus

The Sanden Eco Plus hot water heat pump system range  are split systems, meaning the tank and heat pump unit are separate. They are available in a range of capacities from 160 litres to 315 litres.

Eco Plus heat pump units have what Sanden calls a "Blockout Timer". This can be set to accept / block mains electricity supply at certain time periods, meaning you can set it to operate during the solar window if you have rooftop solar panels.

But it's important to note a major point of difference between Sanden hot water heat pumps and many competitors is they don't have a backup element. Sanden says the Eco Plus doesn't require it as their heat pumps can operate effectively in -10C to +43C.

In cold climate regions, the unit will run during the night when the ambient temperature drops below 3C; taking advantage of off-peak rates. In these cases noise could be a significant concern, but Sanden states a noise level of 37 dBa. That's pretty quiet - less noise than a desktop computer with its fan running according to the firm.

Sanden claims a high Coefficient of Performance (COP=5) for the Eco Plus when tested under AS/NZ5125.1:2014 requirements. As for the refrigerant, Sanden uses R744 (CO2 - carbon dioxide), which is the most ozone friendly choice

Also available for newer Sanden Eco Plus heat pump units is a WiFi controller providing remote access via a smartphone or tablet. It offers features including One Touch Boost, energy usage monitoring  and error reporting, as well as access by authorised Sanden installers to carry out health checks and troubleshooting.

Warranty Information

While Sanden its heat pumps are "designed to last for 15 years" according to the company, the  Eco Plus heat pump unit carries a warranty of 6 years or 10 years (including parts and labour) depending on the model. The stainless steel storage tank carries a 15 year  warranty (including parts and labour) - 10 years at 100% replacement and a further 5 years under a pro-rated scale. The vitreous enamel tank's warranty covers 5 years at 100% replacement and a further 5 years under a pro-rated scale, for a total of 10 years. Tank valves and connectors are covered by 1 - 2 year warranties, and the wifi controller, 1 year.
