Finn's Sungrow EV Chargers Review & Verdict

My pick for best EV charger isn't a unit that hangs on the wall -- it is built into the PowerHarbour Pro, Sungrow's new all-in-one stack, launched in Australia at the end of October 2026. 

That's the right idea. I keep telling people to consider what they already have before buying an EV charger or battery, because having three boxes from three brands with three apps is how solar owners end up charging the car from the grid at 6 pm.

An EV charger that lives inside the inverter, reading the same solar and battery date, removes a whole category of arguement between boxes. It comes without a cable -- so you can buy one long enough to reach your car. Sungrow says the Pro is designed with V2X in mind too, though I'll believe in easy-to-use bidirectional charging in Australia when I see it working on a driveway. 

Why Sungrow? Track record. It's been one of the most installed inverter brands in Australia for years, it has local engineering and support teams, and installers keep choosing it. I own a Sungrow battery myself.

One Catch

I've recently discovered that Sungrow's Local Modbus control is unreliable.

That sounds like nerd stuff, but stick with me. Modbus is how a home energy manager, or a tinkerer running Home Assistant, talks to the inverter directly over your home network without a round trip through Sungrow's cloud. It's your fallback when the internet drops, when the cloud has a bad day, or when the company changes its policies. Having local control gives you protection, as it means your house can't be switched off from somewhere else.

If Sungrow wants PowerHarbour to be the brain of the home, running your battery and your car charging, local control has to be rock solid.

Sungrow's Wall Mounted EV Charger

If you can't get or aren't interested in the PowerHarbour Pro, Sungrow has sold a wall mounted EV charger, their AC22E-01, which has been sold in Australia since June 2025. So far, it has shown itself to be generally reliable and well regarded.

Established in 1997, Sungrow is one of the world's largest solar inverter manufacturers, so it's not surprising the company has expanded into the home EV charger market. The only surprise is that it took the firm a while to do so, with its first device launched overseas in 2022.

Sungrow EV Chargers In Australia

Sungrow has produced several EV chargers over the years, but prior to the launch of their PowerHarbour Pro, the only one we've seem installed in Australia is their AC22E-01 wall mounted unit.

The AC22E-01 EV Charger

The AC22E-01 home EV charger has been sold in Australia since June 2025. When installed with a three-phase connection it can charge at up to 22 kW or 11 kW, depending on how its configured. With a single phase connection, it can charge at up to 7.4 kW.

If your home has three-phase power, it can be installed with a single-phase connection, if you decide 7.4 kW of charging is all you want. 

If the AC22E-01 is installed with the right additional hardware and configured correctly it can solar smart charge and EV and only supply it with surplus solar power that otherwise would have been sent into the grid for a feed-in tariff. But this will require a Sungrow iHomeManager installed in the switchboard and a compatible Sungrow inverter. These devices will need to communicate with each other and the charger will need to be configured with the iHomeManager's iSolarCloud app. 

The AC22E-01 has an IP65 rating, an operating ambient temperature range of -30°C to 50°C, measures 214 mm x 346 mm x 125 mm and weighs 6.65 kilograms. It comes with a 5m tethered cable as standard, or an optional 7m cable.

AC22E-01 Warranty Details

The Sungrow AC22E-01 EV charger itself has a three year warranty, but don't be fooled into thinking that covers everything. The charging cable, plug, and cable holder have a separate warrantly of only 2 years. Worst of all, the optional mounting accessories only have a one year warranty.

Charger does what I want. It does not talk directly to my 8 year old Solax inverter, so I can't get automatic use of solar only. However, it's very easy in the charger app to dial down the EV charging rate to approximately the solar output. This mainly manual setup is just fine for the way I use my EV and solar power. (Apparently, I could get some interfacing widget that would allow the Sungrow charger to talk directly to the Solax inverter, and thereby have automatic use of excess solar only, but I'm not interested in that refinement. As noted, manual setup is just fine for my use.)

If you have a battery then you can only prevent the battery from being discharged by the EV charger by setting the charge period for the EV to match a no-battery discharge period - which means that if you want to take advantage of EV charger deals OR you have daily long distance travel (one of our cars does over 200 km/day and have to charge at night) that whilst the car is being charged you cannot use your house battery for other loads which substantially reduces the value of the battery.

In the "fast charge mode" it will suck the power out of you battery as fast as possible. In ECO modes it may not stake the power from you battery whilst there is sufficient solar power from the panels, but when the solar power reduces it sometimes still becomes a vampire on your house battery.

Note - this is for a sungrow inverter. battery and charger combination ... so you might have expected to be integrated but it isn't really.
