Avoid companies the subcontract Installation

Signed a contract in early June. Almost September and the job has been stalled half done for 4 weeks.

Esena requested the meter works to be done prior to booking an installer, and this led to issues when the meter tech refused to fit a meter isolator to a meter-only board.

No electrician attended to plan or quote the job, and when installation began there was challenges with fitting cabling in the laundry wall and crowding in the switchboard. The installer and Esena agreed to connect the solar in the meter box and locate various other switchgear there. This immediately requires a meter alteration application and attendance by SA Power Networks in SA.

The roof array design was changed twice during installation and tweaked when I pointed out panels hanging over the front of the roof. It is very different to the quoted design.

Initially they tried again to get a meter isolator fitted, which due to their partial install would have been noncompliant. At this stage the meter co. placed a defect notice on the meter installation due to unfinished wiring and switchgear.

Since then the installer has failed to lodge an application to alter the meter, and Esena have made no attempt to manage the process. I am left to call SAPN to ask if they have an application lodged. I do this every 2 weeks, and report to Esena that it has not been lodged.

IF they ever do start the process, there will be 5-6 weeks to get the approval and an appointment to cut the power for fitting the main switch and isolator. Meanwhile I have spent over 7 hours on the phone, and uncounted hours studying installation rules and websites, emailing queries, photos and documents, and listening to glib untruthful assurances that all is in progress.

Esena had the gall to text me today to ask if I need anything further from them. Yes! A solar system, a compliant meter box, and no more of my time spent talking to the Energy Industry Ombudsman, SAPN, Origin, Intellihub and the Office of the Technical Regulator.

Photo is the switchgear added to my meter box without SAPN approval.
