The National Energy Guarantee’s NEGative Impact On Jobs And Health

Loss of solar jobs under the National Energy Guarantee

New economic modelling from Ernst and Young (EY) indicates 20,000 potential jobs could be forfeited under the proposed National Energy Guarantee (NEG), while Doctors for the Environment Australia has warned about potential health implications.

Commissioned by the Climate Council, the ‘Renewable Energy Jobs: Future Growing in Australia 2017 Supplement’ (PDF), states there were would be 20,000 fewer jobs under the National Energy Guarantee compared to reaching a target of 50 per cent renewable energy by 2030. This is based on the lower end of Energy Security Board projections that the NEG would result in 28-36% renewable energy by 2030.

New South Wales would be most affected, with approximately 9,000 less net jobs in the electricity sector in 2030, followed by Queensland (4,000) and Victoria (2,800).

Even under a business-as-usual scenario, there would be 6,600 fewer jobs in the nation’s electricity sector.

The report also says a 28% renewable energy NEG projection would result in little in the way of large-scale wind and solar power construction from 2020 onwards, an issue the Clean Energy Council has previously warned about.

The Climate Council says new large-scale renewables projects are critical to generating new employment and increasing electricity supply in order to rein in and reduce energy prices.

“No matter what the policy is it must drive up renewable energy and drive down pollution. The ambition behind the NEG is too low to do either,” said Climate Council CEO Amanda McKenzie.

In addition to the impact on large-scale renewables, the modelling indicates employment associated with the installation and operation of rooftop solar power systems will be significantly reduced compared to a 50RE scenario

There is still much we don’t know about how the Turnbull Government sees the NEG working to achieve its goals of reducing emissions and increasing reliability. Further details are expected after the Government attempts to sell it to the states at the next COAG meeting.

“Egregious Denial Of Action On Pollution”

In related news, Doctors for the Environment Australia (DEA) has written to all State and Territory leaders, strongly urging them to reject the National Energy Guarantee.

“DEA is deeply disturbed by the health implications of the Government’s proposed (NEG) plan,” states the letter. ” As more analysis accumulates it is increasingly evident that the NEG is designed to encourage continued burning of fossil fuels.”

The DEA says of the 3,000 early deaths annually in Australia from air pollution, about half are from coal mining and combustion of the little black (or brown) rock.

The organisation has labelled the NEG a “thoroughly bad and cynical proposal”.

  1. It should be remembered that the nature of the Australian federal parliament is embodied in its design and shape – the Australian federal parliament is shaped to indicate its nature – like a closed fist, with the middle finger pointing upward.

  2. It is a sad day that the misrepresentatively named “Clean Energy Council” is reported to support and promote the Nenderthal Environmental Goof.

state governments are being urged to sign onto the federal plan for a National Energy Guarantee (NEG) — warts and all.
    Key points:

State and federal energy ministers due to discuss NEG in Hobart on Friday
ACTU, Australian Industry Group and Clean Energy Council among 16 groups
Josh Frydenberg says modelling shows NEG will save households $120 a year

Sixteen groups from across the political and social spectrum have joined together to issue a statement urging timely action to tackle “unsustainably high power prices and rising emissions”, which they warn are “threatening our society, environment and economy”

    and

The call from the 16 groups, which includes the ACTU, the Australian Industry Group and the Clean Energy Council,

So, the ACTU, the Australian Industry Group, and the Clean Energy Council are amongst the conspirators who are seeking to shut down the clean energy industries, thence to increase unemployment and the cost of living in Australia.

  3. Ah, in my last previous post, “Nenderthal” should have been “Neanderthal”.

It is unfortunate that the bodies named, oppose clean energy, and, oppose the Powering Past Coal Alliance, and, that the conspirators intend to cause more gratuitous deaths and injuries through the gratuitous mining and burning of coal.

  4. Bret Busby says

And, here is the future that the feral Loony Neanderthal Parasites government and its dirty cronies want for Australia and the world, through more coal mining and burning more coal:

Players donned face masks and some left the field to vomit as the third Test between India and Sri Lanka in New Delhi was interrupted by heavy pollution.

The majority of the Sri Lankan players returned from the second day’s lunch break wearing facemasks as the seasonal haze affecting the region thickened over the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in the Indian capital.

The second session witnessed two stoppages, of 17 and five minutes, as Lahiru Gamage and his pace colleague Suranga Lakmal both left the field finding it difficult to breathe.

“It’s well documented that Delhi has high level of pollution,” Sri Lanka coach Nic Pothas said afterwards, calling it a “unique case”.

Delhi’s government last month ordered schools temporarily shut after pollution readings in some places peaked at 500, the most severe level on the government’s air quality index that measures poisonous particles.

As many as 115,000 people die in India each year from coal-fired power plant pollution, costing the country about $4.6 billion, according to a groundbreaking new study released today.

The report by the Mumbai-based Conservation Action Trust is the first comprehensive examination of the link between fine particle pollution and health problems in India, where coal is the fuel of choice and energy demands are skyrocketing.

The findings are stunning. In addition to more than 100,000 premature deaths, it links millions of cases of asthma and respiratory ailments to coal exposure. It counts 10,000 children under the age of 5 as fatal victims last year alone.

“I didn’t expect the mortality figures per year to be so high,” said Debi Goenka, executive trustee of the Conservation Action Trust.

Goenka described health impacts as “one of the most neglected aspects” of local environmental impact assessments, saying, “We’re so used to reading the EIA reports year after year saying, ‘There are no impacts on health and human development.'”

    and

Calling the findings “shocking,” the authors said the sickness and death related to coal emissions underscores the need to enact more stringent emissions standards, deploy advanced pollution control technologies and increase the use of cleaner energy options.

But, this is Australia, where the primary objective of the feral parliament, is to cause the most possible harm, while the members of the feral parliament, skim the public money, into their pockets.
