Chinese solar panel manufacturing giant JA Solar says its cumulative module shipments to India have reached 1 gigawatt; two years after it entered that market.

The company states its shipments to India last year represented significant market share in the region and it believes it held a leading share during the first quarter of this year.

“India is emerging as one of the largest PV markets in the world, and JA Solar is well-positioned to continue to capture market share in the region,” said Mr. Baofang Jin, Chairman and CEO.

” We remain focused on driving the R&D innovation that improves our products, which results in reliable modules and professional service to clients.”

Since its founding in 2005, JA Solar has racked up cumulative shipments of more than 20 GW of modules and cells. It currently has 11 production facilities, situated in China’s Shanghai, Hebei, Jiangsu and Anhui provinces; plus factories in Penang, Malaysia and Hanoi, Vietnam .

According to JA’s Fourth Quarter and Fiscal Year 2016 results released last month, the company’s total shipments reached 5.2 gigawatts last year. This total was made up of 4.6 GW of solar modules and module tolling, 313.8 MW of cells and cell tolling to external customers, plus 245.8 MW of modules that were shipped for JA Solar’s downstream projects.

JA Solar says external shipments last year represented an increase of 24.9% from the 3.9 GW it achieved in fiscal year 2015.

For the first quarter of 2017, the company expects it would have achieved total cell and module shipments to be somewhere between the 1,200 – 1,300 MW mark and forecasts shipments for 2017 to be between 6.0 and 6.5 GW.

By the end of 2017, the company expects its silicon wafer production capacity to reach 3 GW (+.5GW compared to end of 2016), cell production capacity to increase to 7 GW (+1.5GW) and module production capacity to hit 6 GW (+.5GW).

JA Solar panels have been a popular choice for home solar power systems in Australia, having gained a reputation for good performance and reliability at a comparatively low pricing point. Unlike some Chinese module brands available in Australia, JA Solar has an established local office, which is located in Newcastle.
