Italy’s FIMER has been producing inverters for decades but only relatively recently entered the home and small commercial market with its acquisition of ABB's solar inverter business.

Although they didn't quite achieve the brand recognition of SMA, I personally rated ABB solar inverters as just as good! They had a reputation for reliability and great customer support, which they only continue under FIMER. And as a bonus they tended to be a bit cheaper than an SMA. 

Headquartered in Vimercate, Italy, Fimer was founded in 1942 and started tinkering with inverter technology in 1983. This isn't really a new area it's moving into, but previously it was mainly focused on inverters for solar farms.

The acquisition, announced in July 2019, was completed in March 2020 - giving FIMER a presence in 26 countries including Australia. A change in branding on the inverters didn't begin to occur until mid-2021 - so, up until that point they were still being produced with the ABB name.

With the acquisition, FIMER said it became the fourth largest solar inverter supplier in the world.

At the time of updating this page (August 2023), the firm had three solar inverter manufacturing facilities - two located in Italy and one in India. It also has several R&D facilities, one of which is in Finland.

The company has stated solar is a well-established and key focus of its operations. FIMER has a good reputation and has been developing inverter technology under its own brand for around 40 years, so it was expected to carry on the tradition of excellence set by ABB.  The firm says (2022) it has a  production capacity of 12 gigawatts a year and it is now manufacturing inverters ranging in capacity from a few kilowatts to huge 7.8 MW conversion units.

The last couple of years haven't treated the company too kindly. Like many other solar manufacturers, it was impacted by lockdowns, shortages of some components and raw materials. Along with some management related challenges, the firm ran into cash liquidity issues and production activities slowed. However, it developed a "relaunch plan" in 2022 designed to get it back on track.

FIMER Solar Inverter Warranty Notes:

FIMER has committed to honoring all existing ABB warranties.

Under the new FIMER branding, there's a ten year full replacement warranty on the REACT2 and UNO-DM range single phase solar inverters and five years on three-phase FIMER string inverters; which can be extended to 10 years for an additional sum. 

If you're having problems with your FIMER solar inverter, your first port of call for resolving the issue is the company that installed the unit as that business has the responsibility of dealing with warranty issues. However, in the event the original installer isn't around any more for whatever reason, FIMER says you should submit an enquiry here; or you can contact the firm on 1800 769 663.

Once a warranty claim has been validated, FIMER will organise shipment of a replacement solar inverter and provide instructions on returning the faulty unit.
