Australian Solar Systems Interest Index: June 2021

While winter may have kicked off last month, that didn’t stop thousands of Australians getting busy on buying an electricity-bill busting solar power system.

On a related note, SQ’s Ronald recently answered a question we often hear: how well does solar power work in winter? (Spoiler: it can work very well – and while output may reduce in winter, it never disappears).

On to this month’s auSSII, covering June 2021.

Solar System Size Selection

In June, nearly 86% of those using the SolarQuotes quote service who had a system size already chosen were wanting to purchase a 6kW package or larger. Among that group approximately 56% wanted a system bigger than 6kW capacity, down on May’s 56%.

Intended Purchasing Timeframe

A whopping 29% of Australians who requested quotes were eager to purchase a system immediately in June – well up on May’s 22%. This increase in interest for immediate installation was particularly noticeable in Victoria – and not surprising given the state’s solar panel rebate reduction that kicked in at the beginning of this month. While the rebate has reduced, it’s still very much worth installing panels in Victoria. Find out more about the Victorian solar panel rebate here.

Price And Quality Considerations

Around 11% were after a “top quality” (most expensive) system in June, down from 13% in May and April. Approximately 81% wanted a package providing a good balance of cost and quality, while a tad over 8% were interested in a good quality budget system. So, what hardware makes up a top quality or good budget system? You can see what Australian installers think in the results of SolarQuotes’ Installer Choice Awards 2021 for the best panels, best inverters and best solar batteries.

Australian Solar Price Index

If you’d like to keep tabs on what’s happening with solar system prices in Australia, check out the SolarQuotes Australian Solar Price Index.

An interactive tool, it displays the average price paid over time for rooftop solar installations across Australia and in individual states; based on install date. You can also drill down to see statistics for various system sizes, and specific solar panel and inverter brands.

Microinverter/Optimiser Option Interest

Approximately 19% of quote enquiries were interested in learning more about microinverter or optimiser options – still significantly higher than a few months back when it was just 13%. What are these useful devices? Learn more about microinverters and optimisers here.

Advanced Solar Power System Monitoring

If it can’t be measured, it can’t be managed – so the old saying goes. Advanced solar monitoring enables you to see how much solar electricity is being self-consumed in your home as well has how much is being generated. In June, just over 41% were interested in consumption monitoring; down from 43% in May. While adding this feature can add a few hundred dollars to a system purchase – it’s money well spent.

Battery Ready Solar

Very little change here again in June, with just 7% expressing interest in a battery-ready system. While all solar systems are battery-ready, informing an installer you’re considering having a battery installed at a later point can help with system design.

Concurrent Solar + Battery Install

A bit over 11% were keen on having a battery added at the same time as a solar power system, compared to a little under 11% in May, ~10% in April and 12% in March. Thinking about a home battery? Give SolarQuotes’ solar and battery calculator a whirl. It’s super-simple to use and will provide estimated savings and payback information on the panels and battery separately.

Battery Capacity Selection

Where a concurrent battery installation was wanted and capacity (size) specified:

  • 1 – 5 kWh: ~7% (May ~11%, April ~13%)
  • 5 – 10 kWh: ~48% (May ~44%, April ~43%)
  • 10 kWh+: ~44% (May  ~45%, April ~44%)

Quite a shift away from the smallest size range – and the lowest level of interest in that category for quite some time.

Intended Battery System Use

Among potential battery owners, 6% wanted it primarily for backup (7% in May, 4% in April, 7% in March), 41% for minimising mains grid electricity consumption (39% in May, 45% in April and 38% in March) and 53% indicated both applications.

Electricity Bills Pre-Solar

Where prior electricity costs were known, a little over 45% were paying between $500 and $1,000 on average per quarter – this group has been between 45% and 47% for some months. Again in June, around 9% indicated power bills of more than $1,000 per quarter.
