SolarEdge is an Israeli inverter company founded in 2006. It is best known for pioneering the concept of a string inverter matched with individual 'DC optimisers' on each solar panel. These optimisers allow:
- individual panel monitoring
- individual panel optimisation (i.e. shade or dirt on one panel will not affect the other panels as in a conventional setup)
- rapid shutdown of panels in the case of an emergency
- slightly more energy generation over the lifetime of the system
- A smaller string inverter because the Multi Power Point Tracking (MPPT) is all done at the panel.
SolarEdge's inverters have historically had a good reputation for reliability and efficiency. In 2018 one reviewer saw signs of emerging poor reliability, while other installers adore the little optimisers and say they've had very few issues.
SolarEdge inverters are compliant with current remote shut down regulations and approved in a number of Virtual Power Plant (VPP) programs across Australia.
Among the safety features of SolarEdge inverters are integrated SafeDC and Rapid Shutdown technology that automatically de-energises DC cables’ to a "touch safe" 1V whenever the inverter is switched off.
SolarEdge offers a comprehensive monitoring platform with live solar electricity production and household energy consumption through the mySolarEdge app. This enables you to see how much solar electricity is being used by your home, how much is flowing into the grid and how much grid electricity you are importing.
According to company, more than 2.5 million SolarEdge inverters and over 60 million power optimizers have been shipped worldwide since 2010.
SolarEdge Inverter Warranty Notes
SolarEdge have one of the best standard inverter warranties in the industry at 12 years, which can be extended to 20 or 25 years. The optimisers are warranted for 25 years.
Here in Australia, the company is based in East Melbourne and they have field technicians across the country.
However, your first port of call in case of a warranty issue is the original installer. Regardless of what that business may say; they are the party responsible for addressing warranty issues.
If the original installer has disappeared, SolarEdge advises customers should contact their Australian office on the number listed above. SolarEdge will then refer an installer in their network to the customer, who will then diagnose the issue and assist with rectifying the problem.

I wanted Panel level monitoring, I feel more comfortable that the individual panels can be shutdown if there is a fault. I also have shading issues the the afternoon, particularly in winter, which I hoped the epitomisers would help with.
The inbuilt consumption monitoring is great and the mobile app works well.

Our system has panels on two faces of the roof so it has a spread output that is not clipped much by the inverter capacity even on good days.

We have had flawless performance of both the inverter and the mySolarEdge app since installation. The app provides detailed information on system production, self-consumption, export to grid, and import from grid statistics across the day. I can even tell when we turn on the kettle, microwave or toaster and when a cloud passes overhead !!
